Plendil is indicated to the treatment of high blood pressure or hypertension. This drug can be administered alone or can be used with other antihypertensive drugs. This drug is from calcium channel blocker class of drugs. These drugs are known for reducing blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels. The calcium channel blockers slow down the rate of calcium flow in the blood vessels. This causes the blood to flow smoothly. This helps to relax the blood vessels and the efficiency of the heart is increased. Some channel blockers like non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker reduces the heart rate which can be dangerous. Plendil is a calcium channel blocker of type dihydropyridine. This does not cause the reduction in the heart rate. The heart is not affected by this drug only the blood flow is increased due to relaxation of the blood vessels. It has also been found that Plendil decreases both systolic and diastolic pressure and effectively decreases the total blood pressure count. It maintains the blood pressure preventing the heart problems to arise. Some of the health care providers recommend this drug as an off label use to treat angina. This drug is not recommended to the children as the effectiveness has not yet been established in them.
