Propranolol LA General Information
Propranolol LA is a medication used for the treatment of hypertension, angina, migraine and hypertrophic subaortic stenosis. This drug belongs to a class of medications called beta adrenergic receptor blockers. Beta receptors are found in different parts of the body like heart, blood vessels, lungs, kidneys. When stress hormones like adrenaline bind to these receptors they cause constriction of blood vessels, increase in heart rate, force of heart beat and high blood pressure. Beta blocker drugs bind to these receptors and inhibit the action of the stress hormones. In this way, they dilate blood vessels, improve blood flow to the heart and decrease blood pressure. The active ingredient in this medication is propranolol hydrochloride. Its chemical name is 2-Propanol, 1-[(1-methylethyl) amino]-3-(1-naphthalenyloxy)-, hydrochloride, (±)- and its molecular formula is C16H21NO2 • HCl. In addition to the active ingredient, the capsules also contain cellulose, gelatin capsules, ethyl cellulose, titanium dioxide, coloring agents and hypromellose. Propranolol LA is available as 60, 80, 120 and 160 mg capsules. The capsules must be taken orally by mouth and should be swallowed whole. If possible, take the medicine at the same time every day. There may be some side effects like headache, nausea, constipation, rashes initially but they usually fade as the body adapts to the medication.
